4 Major Token Launches That Will Drop in 2024
2024 has been the year of omnichains and onmi-tokens, with protocols and dapps issuing native tokens in a variety of creative formats. In 2024, there are a myriad of ways to launch a myriad of tokens, but through trial and error, a number of best practices have ossified. These include airdropping a portion of tokens to early adopters to reward them for their efforts and to ensure a widely distributed community.
The four projects featured here occupy different spheres of web3, but they share two things in common: their native token is imminent and they’ve been sure to build a highly engaged community and MVP before launching a token. With the groundwork laid, they’re now primely positioned to enjoy successful token debuts this year that are all but certain to attract major interest from retail users.
Plena Finance
Web3 app design has gotten significantly better during the current bull market aided by the rollout of enhanced onboarding features such as account abstraction. This eliminates the need for seed phrase storage, allowing beginners to get up and running in no time while still enjoying the benefits of non-custodial wallet storage. Plena is at the vanguard of this trend, one of a host of so-called crypto super apps that aim to do it all.
Plena hasn’t just designed an app blessed with slick UI: it’s also managed to build an engaged community that are vibing on what it’s got coming up next, starting with a token generation event on DAO Maker. Having raised $5M in private funding, Plena Finance is now expected to announce its TGE event any day now.
Upland
Upland is about as well established as web3 games go, having taken the long route to tokenization. This has entailed building a loyal, passionate player base which now constitutes 30,000 DAU and 3M registered players. The game, which launched on EOS and has been backed by EOS Network Ventures, is now preparing to release a token on Ethereum and the launch has been preceded by a Share & Build campaign.
Upland will reward existing players while providing incentives for new arrivals to capture the upside when its token drops. The real estate strategy game, which was inspired by the iconic Monopoly board game, actually has a native currency known as Sparklet. Following the Ethereum token launch, players will be able to convert the in-game currency into the new token, unlocking the next phase in Upland’s evolution.
Scroll
zkEVMs have proliferated over the last 12 months with Polygon launching one, Cronos following suit, and the likes of StarkNet and zkSync launching their native tokens following a lengthy bootstrapping phase. Now it’s the turn of Scroll to demonstrate that the future of L2 is ZK-powered. Despite ostensibly joining a crowded field, Scroll has a few things going for it, not least in being perceived as closely aligning with the ethos of the Ethereum community.
Scroll has significant support from Ethereum OGs and a good number of projects building within its growing ecosystem. Naturally, it’s attracted its share of airdrop farmers too, each hoping for their piece of the pie when its native token launches. While the date has yet to be confirmed, it’s expected to take place before the end of the year, leaving just enough time for airdrop farmers to up their volume and transaction count ahead of the snapshot.
Ponder
Another dominant theme of the current market cycle has been restaking, much of which has been driven by EigenLayer which has unlocked new ways to secure EVM L2s and increase onchain liquidity. Ponder ticks all the right boxes then. Operating as a BNB Chain project, it aims to bring users the best opportunities to generate yield, including from restaking.
Just to throw a few more buzzwords into the mix, Ponder also captures opportunities in RWAs, NFTs, and DeFi. Oh, and memecoins too. No wonder retail is so hyped about its forthcoming token sale on Ape Terminal. It helps that Ape Terminal’s earned a rep as the best performing launchpad, with its most successful projects pulling multiple X’s. It’s too early to tell if Ponder will follow suit, but given the size of its community, coupled with that of Ape Terminal’s, you wouldn’t bet against it.
