What Is The X ‘Private Likes’ Feature And How Will It Work?
Elon Musk, the owner of the X (Previously known as Twitter), has brought up quite a few changes and updates after he took over the social media platform. From changing the platform’s name from Twitter to X to changing the logo of the platform to Dogecoin, a meme coin cryptocurrency, Elon has not only entertained users but brought the platform to trending highlights. One such event is the current X private likes feature, which is unique and quite interesting for users.
In this blog, let us discuss X’s new privacy feature and how it will work.
X Private Likes Feature Offers Privacy & Freedom
On May 2021, Haofei Wang, the director of engineering at X, announced the shift of the network from offering public like to X Private Likes, which means the likes on any X post will not be open to others to maintain their privacy and offer them freedom to appreciate their preference without revealing them to others.
Public likes are incentivizing the wrong behavior… many people feel discouraged from liking content that might be ‘edgy’ in fear of retaliation from trolls, or to protect their public image, said Wang.
However, this feature is not entirely new as the premium users had access to X private likes from August 2023, offering them more privacy as a part of the premium. And now the team officially announced this feature for all the users on June 12, 2024.
How X Private Likes Feature Will Work?
As clear with its name, X private likes features will keep the likes of a post hidden from other persons, but the poster will be able to see them. This feature will now be a default mode, offering privacy.
From now on, the individual can keep his preferences private (liking posts) as no other individual except himself and the one who posted can see the likes. However, the number of likes and interactions is still visible to everyone.
𝕏 is reportedly rolling out private likes starting today. This means that users’ likes on the platform will be hidden by default.

Likes are a part of the algorithm to offer similar interests to people and posts, but offering privacy is equally important. Elon believes that “it is important to allow people to like posts without getting attacked for doing so”. The platform will still maintain the same while providing privacy and freedom to the users. From now on, the like counts for users’ posts will come under notification sections and only the users can see the list of people liking their posts.
